Dr Ramesh Kandel is the first registered Geriatrician (Senior Citizen specialist) and Dementia specialist of Nepal.
He did his postgraduate training, MD in geriatric Medicine from the Prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New-Delhi, India. He completed his MBBS from B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), Dharan , Nepal. Similarly, he completed his I.Sc. in Biology from St. Xavier’s Campus, Maitighar, Kathmandu.
He also served as a Consultant in WHO-South East Asia Regional Office. Before he joined as a Consultant in Healthy Ageing at WHO-SEARO, he founded the first department of Geriatric Medicine as well as Dementia Clinic at Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS), Lalitpur and worked as Assistant Professor of Geriatric Medicine there for 5 years.
He is also involved in various committees working for Geriatric Health and Social Services, under Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) as well as Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens (MWCSC) in Nepal. Dr Ramesh is also the technical advisor to various NGOs working in the field of ageing in Nepal.
Dr Ramesh serves as an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine and Geriatrics, at Rapti Academy of Health Sciences, a government-run academic institution at Dang, Nepal . He is also serving as Medical Director of the institution. He is also working as national consultant for drafting the “National Ageing Strategy” for the Government of Nepal; which is happening for the first time in the history of Nepal.
